Sub-Inspector (SI) Ranbir Singh, who was shot dead by a murder accused in Dharuhera on Thursday night, was cremated at his native Jatoli village in Gurugram district on Friday.

DGP BS Sandhu and ADGP Shrikant Jadhav expressed grief over his death.

The DGP said a special ex-gratia grant of Rs30 lakh under a government policy and another financial assistance of Rs30 lakh would be given to the kin of Singh under a special agreement of accidental death insurance cover. Also, free education up to Class XII would be offered to his children in Police Public School.

The DGP directed the SP to submit challan in the court as early as possible so that severe punishment could be given to the accused.

The accused, Naresh, was on Friday remanded to fiveday police custody.

The SI was felicitated during the Independence Day function here for his commendable service.

Industries Minister Vipul Goel, who was the chief guest at the function, had honoured him for nabbing six members of a gang after an encounter in Pataudi on July 30.

At that time, Singh was in charge of the CIA-1. He was shifted to the CIA-II in Dharuhera 20 days ago and was on the trail of wanted criminal Naresh, who was at large after killing a dhaba owner in the Dharuhera area on October 30.

“Singh got a tip-off that Naresh would come to Dharuhera from Bhiwadi (Rajasthan) on Thursday night. He, along with his team, laid a trap on the Rajasthan border. As soon as Naresh came there, Singh tried to arrest him, but the accused opened fire at the team. One of the bullets hit Singh in the stomach, leaving him injured critically. He was rushed to hospital in Bhiwadi where he died, while Naresh was nabbed,” said Rahul Sharma, Rewari SP.
