Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar today stressed the need for improving the grading of the Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) as a student seeking admission in any educational institute gives top priority to its ranking.

The Governor was speaking at the 53rd Foundation Day function of Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) here today. “This is a time to introspect and assess our shortcomings and achievements so that the institute can achieve greater heights,” he stated. Urban Development Minister, Suresh Bhardwaj and Education Minister Govind Singh Thakur were also present on the occasion.

Congratulating faculty members and students, Arlekar, in his keynote address, said the aim of education should not only be to impart education but make a human being refined and cultured. “Our education should take us towards entrepreneurship and the universities need to work positively in this direction,” he said, adding that learning should be as per the present demand of the society and the curriculum should be decided accordingly.

On the occasion, the Governor laid the foundation of the Manikaran girls’ hostel, which is to be constructed at a cost of Rs 8.11 crore and is being funded by the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment under the Babu Jagjivan Ram Chhatrawas Yojana. The hostel will be spread on an area of 4,410 square metre.

He also inaugurated the painting workshop on the theme ‘My University’ put up by Department of Interdisciplinary Studies. He then released ‘Himshikhar’, ‘Navonmeshi’, and other university magazines, books and brochures.

Bhardwaj detailed various aspects of the National Education Policy 2020 and said the Union and state Governments had made a special budgetary provision for research. He said there had been a vast expansion of education infrastructure in the past few years. He said the university has a glorious history and many prominent personalities and administrators have passed out from the university.

Education Minister Govind Singh Thakur said everyone should take a pledge to develop the HPU as the best institute in the country.

VC Prof SP Bansal said it was a day of self-retrospection, both for the teachers as well as students. The thought “What have we done for our institution and the society” should cross our minds, he said.
