Shimla, March 3
A 30-member delegation from Nepal consisting of farmers and officials from the Agriculture Department visited the HP Horticulture Development Project here today to understand the concept and model of high-density apple cultivation being promoted under the World Bank funded project.
The group is participating in a 10-day training programme focused on ‘Capacity Building of Public and Private Stakeholders for Organic Highland Apple and Walnut Farming in the Karnali Region of Nepal’.
HP Horticulture Development Project team leader Prabal K Chauhan, while providing insights into the activities being implemented under the project, said the project interventions were being undertaken for productivity enhancements in fruit industry of the state by promoting high-density cultivation, plant propagation and multiplication, creation of irrigation infrastructures, Research & Development initiatives, Value Addition and Agri-enterprise Development and Market Development.
“Nepal has geographical similarities with the hilly regions of Himachal Pradesh,” she added.
“These are the collaborative efforts between the External Affairs Ministries of India and Nepal. The Dr Y S Parmar University of Forestry and Horticulture, Solan, is instrumental in this training programme wherein officers and farmers of Nepal are being exposed and trained in organic cultivation of apple, walnut and kiwi,” she said.
