Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University’s fodder section in the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding has developed a new fodder oats variety HFO 607.

It was identified (recognised) at the Varietal Identification Committee meeting at the National Group Meet (Rabi 2019-20) on the All-India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Forage Crops and Utilisation held at Central Agricultural University, Imphal, recently.

Vice-Chancellor Prof KP Singh congratulated the team of scientists. He said that this variety of oats has been identified for cultivation in the northwest region mainly Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, the Terai region of Uttarakhand and western Uttar Pradesh.

It is suitable for timely sown, irrigated under single cut system. This variety has been developed by a team of scientists comprising DS Phogat, Yogesh Jindal and Minakshi Jattan and the collaborators are Naveen Kumar, Dalvinder Pal Singh and Jayanti Tokas.

The university spokesperson said that the new variety is excellent in terms of production and nutrition. This variety of oats is suitable for timely harvesting in harvested and irrigated areas.

HFO 607 gave 615.7 quintal per hectare (q/ha) green fodder yield which is 11.9 per cent and 17.4 per cent more than the national checks Kent (549.4 q/ha) and OS 6 (531.5 q/ha), respectively, he said.

He added that it showed superiority of 8.8 per cent for green fodder yield over the North West zone check OL 125 (565.3 q/ha).

It out-yielded (131.2 q/ha) the best national checks Kent (115.9 q/ha) by 12.98 per cent and OS 6 (106.7 q/ha) by 23.93 per cent for dry matter yield.
