Jalandhar, September 14

As the final list of candidates contesting the Zila Parishad elections has been finalised, the SAD and Congress appear to be the main contenders in the district as other parties, including AAP, are nowhere in the scene.

The SAD and the Congress have fielded 20 candidates each in the district. Krishan Kumar is the only candidate of the AAP, who is contesting the elections from the Adraman zone in Nakodar.

There are 54 candidates in the poll fray. Of them, 13 are contesting as Independent.

The Deputy Commissioner has said the elections will be held on September 19 from 8 am to 4 pm. He said counting of votes would be conducted on September 22.

It seems to be a close contest between the Congress and the SAD in several zones such as Jamshed, Talwan and Bundela.

Harpal Singh Sandhu, district office secretary of the Congress, said the party candidates were going door to door in all villages to woo voters.

Sandhu said this time, the mood of voters could be judged easily as the AAP, main Opposition party in the state, had kept itself away from fielding its representatives in the village-level elections.
