The J&K High Court has directed the state government to strictly implement the judgment of the Supreme Cout about the rights of the transgenders in Jammu and Kashmir.

These directions were passed by a division bench headed by Chief Justice Gita Mittal on Monday.

The court also directed the state government to submit status report in this regard within four weeks.

The petitioners had approached the court for the protection of constitutional rights of transgenders in the state and prayed that the state government be directed to implement the judgment of the apex court passed in National Legal Services Authority Vs Union of India.

They further sought directions to the government for determining the exact number of transgenders in the state besides a guaranteed quality life in terms of political, social and economic standards so that no transgender is subjected to any form of discrimination, injustice or violence.
