On World Suicide Prevention Day, actress Somy Ali talks about the sensitive issue

What according to you are the major reasons behind suicide?

Researchers say that 90 per cent of people who commit suicide have an underlying and potentially treatable mental health condition. No one takes his or her own life for a single reason. Life stresses combined with known risk factors, such as childhood trauma, substance abuse or even chronic physical pain can contribute to suicide.

Have you ever got a suicidal thought? If yes when and how did you handle it?

Yes, and I have no shame in admitting it. I am a huge proponent of speaking up against the stigma attached to mental health. I sought help and went through countless sessions with not one, but three different psychologists. It truly helps to heal oneself, if not fully, but enough to eliminate suicidal thoughts by seeking therapy and even taking anti-depressants.

Do you think emotional setbacks/lack of trust make people go into a shell because of which they don’t express or share what is on their mind?

I blame our society for making fun of people with mental ailments. This is not a laughing matter. It is literally a matter of life and death. People who are suffering do not speak up because they are afraid of being mocked or deemed crazy.

During the pandemic, insecurity about job, work, business, relationships and marriage has increased manifold. What do you think is the solution?

Communication is the only solution. We must talk our problems out or else matters will only deteriorate. People suffering after the pandemic must seek help. There are NGOs that will provide therapy for free and people should use their services.

How do you keep yourself motivated personally and professionally?

Personally, exercise is a must to stay sane and we all know it releases endorphins, which raises our serotonin level and makes us automatically feel good. Plus, spending time with my friends, only two; I prefer quality over quantity! Work in my motivation.

Share your philosophy of life…

One is to never give up on something you have signed up for and is your sole purpose on this planet. Lastly, there are no guarantees in life so be careful whom you trust.
