The city police claimed to have busted an interstate gang of swindlers and car thieves with the arrest of two persons, identified as Gunwantveer Singh (35) of Nawan Mohalla, Lakkar Bazar, and Tarun Kumar, alias Bobby Verma (49), a resident of Professor Colony in Phagwara, from Feroze Gandhi Market here. Three more members of the gang are at large.
Giving details, DCP Simratpal Singh Dhindsa said 10 cars, stolen or purchased through bank loans on forged documents, along with five fake registration certificates and 10 pairs of fake number plates were recovered on the basis of information provided by the arrested members of the gang during preliminary interrogation.
The three other members of the gang who are evading arrest have been identified as Manu Chauhan, a resident of Haryana, Avtar Singh and Ateeq Hussain, both residents of Kharar.
According to Dhindsa, the suspects prepared fake identity papers and got new vehicles financed from banks. Thereafter, these brand new vehicles were sold to unsuspecting buyers by making fake registration certificates and other documents, and at times, bogus registration numbers were used for these vehicles. “The members of the interstate gang were cheating both the banks and the buyers,” said the DCP.
