Ludhiana, November 16

Intensifying their agitation against the Punjab Government, members of the Municipal Karamchari Dal closed the main entrance gate of the MC’s Zone A office near Mata Rani Chowk here for nearly two hours on Tuesday.

Association members accused the Congress government of failing to regularise the services of contractual safai karamcharis, sewer men and other Class IV employees.

The members raised slogans against the government during the protest and burnt an effigy of Minister for Local Government Brahm Mohindra. It was the fourth day of the protest.

A member of the association said, “The contractual sanitation employees have been working on a low salary for a long period but their services have not been regularised by the government so far. The sweepers, sewer men and other sanitation workers performed their duty with dedication during the Covid-19 pandemic. Even they used to perform their duty during the curfew/lockdown period. These employees do their job under tough conditions but the government ignored them.”

Chairman of the association Vijay Danav said the government has not regularised the services of the contractual employees till date. Thus, they are staging protests against the government.

Meanwhile, the visitors were unable to go in or come out of the MC office as the union members had closed the gate for marking their protest.
