Jalandhar, March 8

A man was nabbed with 4.5 kg of opium by the Sultanpur Lodhi police here. Identified as Gurbir Singh, the man took to drug peddling due to poor financial condition, the police said.

DSP Sarwan Singh Bal while addressing mediapersons said during a naka outside Gurdwara Hut Sahib, a Maruti Swift car (AS 01 AF 9318) was seen coming from the Lohian side. A man stopped the car and came out of the vehicle after parking it by the roadside. Then, he threw a polythene bag near a shop. On being apprehended, he has been identified as Gurbir Singh from Peeran Vali Mohalla, Tarn Taran.

He said 4.5 kg of opium was recovered from the man, which costs Rs 9 lakh in the international market.

A case had been registered under the NDPS Act at the Sultanpur Lodhi police station. DSP Sarwan Bal said he brought the opium from Imphal, Manipur. He said further revelations were also expected in the case. Earlier this week, the Kapurthala police had seized 520-gm heroin in another case. — TNS
