New Delhi, February 19

After covering surrogacy, the government today paved the way for regulating other forms of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) with the Union Cabinet approving a related legislation.

The Draft Assisted Reproductive Technology Bill, 2020, seeks to establish a National Advisory Board, State Advisory Boards and a national registry for accreditation, regulation and supervision of all assisted reproductive technology clinics and assisted reproductive technology banks.

The original ART Bill covered surrogacy too, but the government later decided to frame a standalone law to address surrogacy in the light of the rising instances of exploitation of women for surrogacy, a two-billiondollar industry.
