Patiala, January 17

A plethysmograph, purchased at the cost of Rs 24 lakh for research purpose, is lying dismantled at the Physiology Department of the Government Medical College here for over a year.

The machine is used to measure changes in the volume within an organ or whole body, usually resulting from fluctuations in the amount of blood or air it contains. It is used by doctor to determine if there is a blood clot in the patient’s limbs.

Plethysmography is a widely used method in basic and preclinical research to study respiration, say experts.

It has been learnt that the machine was used for a while before it was dismantled a year ago to “accommodate a faculty member”, said a source. It has turned into a showpiece now.

A professor, who wished anonymity, said, “It is unfortunate that an important machine is lying unused for over a year. It is a loss to the students and faculty because the machine can be used for research work.”

Dr Harjinder Singh, Principal, Government Medical College, said, “I will ask the department to apprise me of the issue. If need be, we will form a committee to look into the matter.”
