Police caution people against online frauds

Considering a steep rise in the number of frauds during online shopping, cyber crime wing of the police has urged people not to undertake QR code scanning on anybody’s request.

DSP State Crime Cell Narveer Rathore revealed that with the rise in use of smart phones for online shopping, there had been a steep rise in the number of online frauds. “QR code is used for making online payments for shopping and fraudsters posing as buyers ask the individuals to scan the QR code, sent on Whatsapp or mail,” he disclosed.

The moment a person scans the QR code, it routes him to the wrong site, resulting in deduction from his account. Many such complaints had been received at the cyber cell all over the state. “Fraudsters ask the person to scan the QR code to be able to make payment but finally does not make delivery of the product promised as it is a fraud,” said Rathore.

He cautioned people not to fall prey to these kind of temptations and offers being made on social media, mail and Whatsapp as such people are only committing frauds. He urged people to make complaints regarding any such fraudsters on phone – 0177- 2620331, 2621331 or on mail at [email protected].
