Cong, AAP leaders lock horns over RoB opening

In a political tug of war to seek credit for the construction of a railway overbridge in Kotkapura, AAP and Congress leaders of the area today locked horns on its opening ceremony.

A day before the inauguration of the 1.75-km overbridge on the Kotkapura-Faridkot road by Congress leaders, AAP MLA from Kotkapura Kultar Singh Sandhwan and his supporters removed the heavy boulders, which were placed to block the traffic on the bridge, and announced its opening. Placing the same boulders on the bridge later on Monday evening, Congress party workers blocked and on Tuesday, organised a religious ceremony and inaugurated the bridge officially.

After much dilly-dallying, it took three years to complete the bridge. With political parties claiming credit, the inauguration of the bridge had been facing delay. While Congress leaders called the bridge their achievement, Akalis claimed its construction was started during their tenure.

Congress party leaders claimed it was started in 2017 after they came into power. Former Akali MLA from Kotkapura Mantar Singh Brar, on the other hand, said the construction of the bridge was started by then Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal on August 13, 2016. — TNS
