Kapurthala, January 15
The court of JMIC, Kapurthala, Supreet Kaur on Monday granted bail to Congress Bholath MLA Sukhpal Khaira in a case registered against him for allegedly threatening a witness in the 2015 drugs case against him in Fazilka.
Khaira was released from the Nabha jail after which he reached Chandigarh this evening. The case had been lodged against him on January 4, the same day on which he was granted bail in the drugs case, at Subhanpur police station in Kapurthala.
Ranjit Kaur, wife of witness Kashmir Singh in the case, had lodged a complaint that she was threatened to force her husband to withdraw the statement he had given against MLA Khaira. He was booked under Sections 195-A and 560 of the IPC.
Talking to The Tribune on the phone after his release, Khaira said, “I always knew that CM Bhagwant Mann would avenge for taking on him and his government for all their misdeeds. But I never knew that he would stoop down to this level of political indecency. I was kept in solitary confinement for four months but, thankfully, I am mentally intact and in the right frame of mind. I got access to newspapers after I took up a plea on the matter. There was a camera installed in my cell.”
“I intend to be at home and with my family in Chandigarh for the next two days. I also intend to analyse all events that have taken taken place since my imprisonment in October. After that, I will surely come before the media and share all loopholes in the case and expose all those who were behind pushing me back to jail,” he said.
Soon after his orders were passed, Khaira's son and lawyer Mehtab Khaira posted on X, “With the grace of Almighty Waheguru, my father Sardar @SukhpalKhaira has been granted bail by the Kapurthala court in the second utterly false and vindictive case slapped against him on the personal directions of CM Bhagwant Mann. We are extremely thankful to all those who stood by my father during these last four months of brutal attack on his freedom and liberty. Truth can be suppressed but it cannot be defeated. We are all eagerly looking forward to his release from the Nabha jail”.
PPCC chief Amarinder S Raja Warring also wrote, “Justice has prevailed as Sukhpal Khaira is granted bail. Fairness and truth triumphs!”
