Principals oppose move to disaffiliate 40 Panjab University colleges

Abohar, July 9

The principals of three local colleges run by the DAV Managing Committee have opposed the move to transfer affiliation of 40 colleges of Fazilka and Muktsar districts from Panjab University (PU) to some other university.

Seeking intervention of PPCC president Sunil Jakhar, Rajesh Mahajan, Principal, DAV College, Rekha Sood Handa, Principal, Gopichand Arya Mahila College, and Urmil Sethi, Principal, DAV College of Education, said a high-power committee had recommended some changes in the governing structure of PU. It had recommended that the colleges situated more than 200-250 km away from Chandigarh should be detached from PU and affiliated to some other state university. Due to this, 40 colleges in Abohar, Fazilka, Malout, Gidderbaha, Jalalabad and Muktsar would be adversely affected, they said.

The principals said it was unfair as many colleges of their region were established 40-50 years ago. DAV College, Abohar was established in 1960 and has been affiliated to PU for a long time. They said the idea of territorial restructuring was earlier mooted in 1999, which was opposed and the government did not implement the decision.

Don’t limit varsity’s jurisdiction: YAD

  • Youth Akali Dal (YAD) chief Parambans Singh Romana on Friday demanded the withdrawal of the PU Chancellor’s high-level committee report, which proposed to disaffiliate around 200 colleges in seven districts of the Malwa belt
  • He said members of the YAD and SOI would hold a protest in front of the VC’s office on July 12
  • “We will not tolerate any step to reduce the territorial jurisdiction of the university to the outskirts of the UT. It is clear that the RSS wants to use the university to brainwash the youth of the region as per its agenda,” he said. — TNS
