Sangrur, July 25
On the DC office road, which is the most prominent stretch in Sangrur city, people have been brazenly converting their houses into commercial units. As the Nagar Council (NC) does not take any action, residents allege that the illegal practice is rampant with the connivance of NC officers.
Officials’ role under scanner
Such a large number of commercial buildings can’t come up on the road without the connivance of Nagar Council officials. I’ll take up the matter with the state govt for strict action. Avtar Ealwal, AAP Leader
“The NC has always been in the news for wrongdoings. We are trying to set its working right,” said Avtar Ealwal, district president of the Intellectual Wing of AAP.
Besides small shops, big showrooms, IELTS institutes and immigration offices have come up on the road in the last few years. Though some shops were built over a decade ago, many big buildings have come up in the last 10 years. Many have been built recently and are awaiting tenants.
“It is a residential area and not even a single commercial building can be built here. However, the brazen construction of shops and buildings clearly shows that NC officers have failed to take any action. If the state is really serious about making things right, it must seal all such buildings immediately,” said a resident of Prem Basti.
Interestingly, it is happening in front of the District Administrative Complex, where offices of the DC, ADC, SDM etc, are located.
“We had passed a resolution to declare the DC road a commercial stretch and sent the proposal to the authorities some years ago, but the approval is still pending and the area is still residential,” said Sarjiwan Jindal, a BJP leader and former vice-president of the Sangrur NC.
NC Executive Officer Mohit Sharma said he had joined Sangrur sometime back and had sought all records. “The DC office road is residential. We have decided to issue notices to all those who have built commercial buildings there,” he added.
