Bengaluru, June 16

Mumbai produced a superb bowling display to bundle out Uttar Pradesh for a paltry 180 and take the crucial first-innings lead on the third day of their Ranji Trophy semifinal here today.

Resuming at the overnight score of 25/2, the UP batters could add just 155 more to the total as Mumbai’s Tushar Deshpande (3/34), Tanush Kotian (3/35) and Mohit Avasthi (3/39) wreaked havoc.

Skipper Prithvi Shaw hit 12 boundaries in his 71-ball 64 as Mumbai finished the day at 133/1 in their second innings, extending the overall lead to 346 runs.

Mumbai had posted 393 in their first essay, courtesy hundreds by Yashasvi Jaiswal and Hardik Tamore.

Dominant Mumbai

UP lost wickets regularly after resumption of play today, with the 41-time Ranji Trophy champions dominating from the start.

The first dismissal of the day was skipper Karan Sharma (27), who became Avasthi’s first victim. Opener Madhav Kaushik (38) and Rinku Singh (16) managed to forge a paltry 32-run stand for the fifth wicket before the former was dismissed by Kotian. Afterwards, the UP batters made a beeline to the pavilion — Singh, Dhruv Jurel (2) and Saurabh Kumar (0) fell in quick succession. Kotian trapped Singh in front of the wickets while Avasthi accounted for Jurel and Kumar. Shivam Mavi (48) put up some resistance batting at No. 8, but it didn’t last long. He hit four boundaries and two sixes in his blazing 55-ball knock before Deshpande swung into action and mowed down the tail.

Patidar shines

Alur (Karnataka): Rajat Patidar hit an unbeaten half-century to put Madhya Pradesh in the driver’s seat against Bengal in the other semifinal today.

Continuing his dream run, Patidar took the centrestage in MP’s second essay with an elegant 63 not out as his side gained a vital 78-run first-innings lead.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore batter, who scored a century and two half-centuries in the IPL, slammed 10 boundaries in his 109-ball knock to push MP to 163/2 at stumps on Day 3.
