Time management holds the key in the last leg

With JEE April session around the corner, it’s time to pull up your socks for the final chance to ace it in 2020

Time management holds the key in the last leg

Saurabh Kumar

For students planning to appear for the second phase of JEE Mains in April, very less time is left for preparation. The Board exams have made a majority of students put JEE preparation on the backburner. But there is no need to press the panic button if you feel not fully prepared for the crucial exam. First of all, do not think too much about the January result, especially if it did not meet your expectations. Keep yourself motivated and you will surely do well in April. Board exams have started and now the focus should be on creating a win-win situation for both the exams: Class XII Board as well as JEE.

Board exams will be over by the end of this week, so it will be time to devote 100 per cent attention to JEE Mains after that. As per the JEE Main pattern, about 55 per cent of questions are from Class XII syllabus. So, your preparation from the NCERT books for chemistry, especially inorganic chemistry, chemistry in everyday life, environmental chemistry and coordination compounds will come in handy in the JEE exam. For physics, refer to the NCERT book for classical magnetism, EM waves, diffraction and polarisation, optical instruments, communication systems and Semiconductor devices. For mathematics, focus more on 3D and vectors, mathematical reasoning, statistics and probability and differential equations. If you find some spare time take a mock test of JEE Main.

Over the next couple of weeks you need to slog. During this time, one should study for nine to 10 hours a day. One should regularly take mock tests. After the test spend at least 30 minutes in analysing it to understand strong and weak areas, and take care of the same in next test as well as the JEE exam.

You can also try attempting any subject first and see which one suits you the best to start with. Remember, every student is different. If starting with chemistry works well for your friend, may be starting with maths will be better for you. So, don’t copy strategies of others.

Divide the remaining six or seven hours into two or three slots for different subjects.

Ideally one should devote equal time to all subjects, but you can keep a little more time for the subject in which you are weak.

Normally, chemistry is the most-scoring, followed by physics, and then maths. In this time span you should focus on Class XI topics because by now you would be already afresh with Class XII topics after appearing for Board exams.

Lastly, in the tight schedule of preparation don’t forget to stay healthy. Avoid fried and fast food, take antioxidants, drink plenty of water and take small breaks after two hours of study. Go a walk or listen to light music. Take proper sleep as well.

Revise well

From Class XI syllabus, try to revise the following topics as soon as possible:

Physics

  • Thermodynamics
  • Kinetic Theory of Gases
  • Oscillation and Waves
  • Units & Measurements.
  • Rotational mechanics.

Chemistry

  • Hydrogen
  • S-Block Elements
  • P-Block Elements
  • D and F-Block Element
  • Classification of Elements and Periodicity in Properties
  • General Principles and Processes of Isolation of Metals

Mathematics

  • Co-Ordinate Geometry
  • Sets, Relations and Functions
  • Complex Numbers and Quadratic Equations
  • Matrices and Determinants
  • Permutations and Combinations
