Amritsar, July 16

With the operationalisation of the extension of the Bhandari railway overbridge on Monday, the traffic police threw a new traffic set-up for the smooth flow of traffic on experimental basis.

The bridge’s one-way lane to the railway link road has been made two-way. It provides direct access to the traffic coming from the court road to the overbridge as they no longer need to travel to Crystal Chowk.

Police officials had a tough time controlling the traffic on the overbridge after the new traffic plan was implemented by creating temporary divider. Meanwhile, a huge traffic jam was witnessed on the overbridge during the visit of VIPs.

Heavy vehicles, like buses, had a tough time to take a turn from the roundabout outside the Hall Gate to move on the newly-opened extension of the ROB. There was a tremendous traffic jam on adjoining roads in front of the gate.

Police officials manning the ROB stated that temporary traffic arrangement was placed on the ROB. Daily experience will guide to make it more efficient and trouble free routes.

It is pertinent to mention that according to a survey conducted couple of years ago by the RITES stated that over one lakh vehicles pass through this bridge in 24 hours.

Another study conducted by the Punjab Pollution Control Board reported that vehicular pollution over and around the Bhandari bridge was the highest in the city.
