As many as 11,474 students have got themselves enrolled in the pre-primary wing at 874 government schools in the district. Most of them come from rural background.

Last year, the number was 13,500 after the government. The authorities concerned say that the numbers will go up once the session commences.

The state government began with its primary wings amid protest by anganwadi workers. Kids in the age group of three to six can study in nursery, LKG and UKG classes.

Manpreet Kaur, District Coordinator, Padho Punjab, Padhao Punjab scheme, says, “There has been a change in the attitude of people as almost everyone wants to send his or her ward to school. I have seen a lot of enthusiasm among the residents of the district.”

Last year, the anganwadi workers had raised a hue and cry over it as the scheme gives options to toddlers to go directly to schools. Most of them had expressed their fear of losing jobs.

We have been conducting a number of sessions for teachers’ training to raise the level of education, Kaur adds.

DEO (Elementary) Shishupal Kaushal said, “Parents are sending their wards to schools as these provide education unlike anganwadis. We have prepared a list of furniture. Schools will be provided required items. The numbers of students will go up once the session starts.”
