With financial year coming to an end on March 31, the traffic police seem to be on a challaning spree in the city, believe residents.

Retired Professor Mohan Singh said as these days police officers were often seen issuing challans to motorists, it was generally believed that they were out to meet the target of challans in the current fiscal.

“Commuters are not happy with the traffic police for devoting more time to check documents of vehicles and ignoring visible offences. The traffic police should issue challans to those who jump traffic lights, drive rashly and pollute the city,” he added.

Balram Kumar Sharma, president, Punjab Sudhar Sabha, said the traffic police seemed to have turned a blind eye to other violations on roads. For an instance, rashly driven and smoke emitting vehicles go unchecked, he added.

“These vehicles can be seen plying on city roads on a regular basis. But it seems that the traffic cops are only concerned about checking documents of vehicles. Violators go scot-free but innocents have to bear the brunt in the name of discipline,” he added.

BJP leader Laxmi Kanta Chawla said the police must evolve a mechanism in which the commuters have to showcase documents of their vehicles to the department concerned once a year.

She said after producing all mandatory documents before a single authority, they should be issued a sticker so that the need for checking the documents further doesn’t require.

The former minister added that the move would reduce the burden on traffic police personnel and they would be able to focus more on streamlining traffic in a better way. It would also reduce corruption, she added.

However, Traffic police officers denied the allegations and said there were all rumours. They added that traffic cops were following the procedure to bring traffic violators to book. — TNS
