Residents of Amarpura Basti are deeply perturbed as overflowing sewerage water has thrown normal life out of gear for the past over one week. Residents said despite bringing the matter to notice of authorities concerned, nothing has been done as of now.

Area residents rued that the problem of sewerage overflow has been troubling them repeatedly for the past over a year. They alleged that authorities concerned had not got the sewers cleaned in the past over one year, resulting in complete blockage in the sewer line and overflow of sewage on streets.

Kulwant Singh, an area resident, said: “It’s been over eight days that the area residents are wading their way through the sewerage as the streets have submerged completely. Neither commuters nor pedestrians can pass through the street now. It was my son’s marriage few days ago and despite reporting the matter to the authorities, they did not do anything to clean the sewer line or the roads. I do not know what it will take for the workers to get here and resolve the problem.”

Ganesh Kumar and Bhola Singh said: “As dirty water has been accumulating in the street for over eight days now, bees and mosquitoes have started hovering over it, making the area residents vulnerable to vector-borne diseases. Moreover, it is really difficult to pass by the street as foul smell keeps emanating in the area throughout the day.”

The area falls under Ward No. 33 and according to residents, they have been facing the problem of sewerage overflow on a frequent basis.

Area Councillor Jagraj Singh said: “The problem is not in my knowledge as nobody informed me about it. I was engaged in other important works as well. Now that it has been brought to my notice, I will get the cleaning work of sewer done on a priority basis.”

Mayor Balwant Rai Nath could not be contacted, despite repeated attempts.
