As many as 47 people, including a child, are reported to be suffering from leprosy in Mohali district. Out of 47 cases, 44 were from the last year, which were still under treatment, while 19 cases were added in between April to September this year. So far, 17 out of 44 patients, suffering from leprosy last year, have been cured. Most patients suffering from leprosy are poor migrant labourers.

Civil Surgeon, Dr Manjit Singh, stated this on the sidelines of an awareness rally organised by the Health Department to eradicate leprosy recently.

“People suffering from leprosy are a vital part of our society. They should not be discriminated against any grounds. All they need is love, compassion, healthy life and care from society like the rest,” said Dr Manjit.

“Leprosy is not a contagious disease as generally considered by a majority of the people. It is totally curable,” he added.

Addressing participants at the rally Dr Manjit said, “The purpose of this rally is to create awareness among the masses about leprosy. This bacterial infection often grows gradually and could lead to severe health consequences like significant disfigurement and attacking nervous system, if patients are not given treatment at the proper time.”

Elaborating about symptoms, causes and treatment of the disease, Dr Jastej Singh Kular, state leprosy officer, said, “Serving leprosy patients is a kind of social work. Everyone should meet and talk to patients at leprosy ashrams. The treatment for this disease is free of cost at all public health institutions.”

Leprosy treatment

Leprosy can be cured through combination of drugs known as multidrug therapy (MDT). The MDT depends on the classification of the disease. Usually, medical professionals recommend antibiotics for at least six to 12 months or more to cure the disease.
