Chandigarh, December  12

Taking  a serious  view  of the  carelessness on the part of the contractor, who left heritage   manhole covers in Sector  18  after replacing  them  with   cemented ones,  Manoj  Kumar  Bansal,  Chief  Engineer,  Municipal  Corporation, issued  directions to install them at community centres  or some  secure place.  Bansal, along with some senior officials of the  MC,  visited the Sector 18 market and directed  officials to be  careful in case  the removal  of manhole covers became unavoidable.  Bansal   said the  manhole  covers   had been shifted to a  safe place. Notably, the value of these covers varies from  Rs 10 to Rs 15 lakh  in the  international market.

Inquiry sought

While  demanding  an inquiry  into the  carelessness  of MC  officials over the  damage to  the manhole  covers,  Ajay  Jagga, an advocate and a member  of the heritage council, said an  FIR  should be registered  against those  who left the  manhole covers unattended for  two days. Jagga,  in a letter to the  UT  Adviser, sought an inquiry into the matter. —TNS
