Chandigarh, August 23

The Chandigarh School of Drama staged a Punjabi play, “Satt Begane”, on third day of the ongoing Gursharan Singh Naat Utsav, dedicated to thespian Ajmer Aulakh, at the Randhawa auditorium here today.

The play brought into focus the issues like the caste system and exploitation of peasants in rural Punjab. Protagonist Bachna, owning a small piece of land, fails to get a compatible match from his Jatt community and plans to marry a girl from a lower caste, only to face ostracism from the community. The problem compounds as none of his four sons gets a suitable match due to a lower caste stigma attached to their mother. — OC
