Hamirpur, August 13

Finding it hard to keep the town clean, the district administration has plans to enforce cleanliness by keeping a watch over offenders through Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) camera surveillance.

The administration had given a deadline to the Municipal Committee to enforce door-to-door garbage collection by August 1. But all efforts of the MC proved futile and the garbage scenario in the town turned from bad to worse.

The MC had hired five contractors for door-to-door collection at a cost of Rs. 26.60 lakh. RK Gautam, Director, Urban Bodies, had also raised a question on the tendering process for the garbage collection on his recent visit to the town.

The main problem the civic body had faced was delay in the collection of heaps of garbage,  seen lying in the main market during the day. It was also surprising that the municipal authorities did not bother to meet the norms for hiring garbage collection vehicles. The garbage was transported in open vehicles and instead the cleaning of these vehicles became a problem. The norms for the garbage collection vehicle clearly states that it should have separate compartments for dry and wet garbage. Residents of the town were taken by  surprise when they saw that separately collected garbage was mixed by the garbage collection teams.

Deputy Commissioner Harikesh Meena said the mission to keep the town clean was the top priority. He said to keep a vigil on offenders, installation of CCTV cameras was proposed. Those not adhering to the cleanliness drive would be penalised, he added.
