Solan, January 16

Peeved at the unavailability of adequate facilities on the campus, students of Dr YS Parmar Government Medical College, Nahan, boycotted their classes today.

The students rued that the college was bereft of basic facilities and this was hampering the smooth conduct of classes. They tied black ribbons on their arms as a sign of protest and did not attend classes despite being coaxed by faculty members.

The students alleged that the college was flouting norms and though as per the Medical Council of India (MCI) provisions a 50-bed hospital was supposed to be available, efforts were being made to meet this requirement through an ayurveda hospital.

Among major demands raised by the students included provision of diet system in hostel mess. The students complained that the toilet facility for the students was inadequate and no water filter had been installed for safe drinking water on the campus.

The college, which was yet to establish various facilities, had as much as about 83 per cent shortfall in the number of Senior Residents.

The students have demanded principal’s intervention to resolve the pending issues, informed agitating students.

The college, which was opened in August 2016 with an inaugural batch strength of 100 MBBS seats, was now entering its third year. The boycott of classes at a time when the MCI report had already pointed out glaring deficiencies does not augur well for the college.

Principal Dr Jaishree Sharma was not available for comments.
