SRINAGAR: The nine-phase panchayat election in J&K will conclude with the polling for the last phase being held in nine districts of the Kashmir valley on Tuesday.

The nine-phase panchayat election in J&K will conclude with the polling for the last phase being held in nine districts of the Kashmir valley on Tuesday. The elections in the Ladakh region and the Jammu division have already been completed.

Except for Srinagar district, the polling is being held in different blocks of nine districts of Baramulla, Kupwara and Bandipora in north Kashmir; Budgam and Ganderbal in central Kashmir; and Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian and Kulgam in south Kashmir.

The polling will be held at 452 polling stations, out of which 346 have been categorised as hypersensitive.

According to the Chief Electoral Officer, J&K, 430 candidates in the fray for 55 sarpanch and 138 panch seats while 68 sarpanches and 433 panches have been elected unopposed in this phase. He said an electorate of 68,745 would be voting for the sarpanch constituencies and 20,688 for the panch constituencies. —TNS
