The court of the District and Sessions Judge Sunil Kumar Arora sentenced Navjet Singh, alias Sona, a resident under the Bhakhiana police station Rawalpindi in Kapurthala district, to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment (RI) and a fine of Rs 1 lakh in a drugs smuggling case.
If the penalty is not paid, the convict will have to undergo an additional imprisonment of one year.
The Garhshankar police had conducted checking against illegal activities at Nangal Chowk on September 9, 2015.
During this time, secret information was received by the police that a large quantity of intoxicants was being smuggled and opium being brought in a huge quantity from Bihar in a private car. During this time, a police party asked a car coming from the Nawanshahr road to stop. At this, the car driver tried to break the barricade, but the police party nabbed the driver, Navjet Singh. When the police searched the car, 25 kg of opium was seized from the vehicle. The police registered a case against Navtej under the NDPS Act.
