Fifth round concludes at chess c’ship

JALANDHAR: A nine-day National U-13 Chess Tournament is being held at Cambridge International School for Girls (Urban Estate-II), from June 21 to June 29.

A nine-day National U-13 Chess Tournament is being held at Cambridge International School for Girls (Urban Estate-II), from June 21 to June 29. The championship is organised by the Jalandhar Chess Association on behalf of the Punjab State Chess Association under the aegis of the All India Chess Federation. As many as 277 players from 25 states of India have participated in the championship. The first two position holders will represent India in the coming World and Asian Chess Championship and total cash prize of Rs 2,25,000 will be given away to the participants for the first 18 positions in each category, as per the information given by the tournament director and JCA secretary Muneesh Thapar.

After the fifth round standing, in the category of girls, the top five players include Jyothsna L from Tamil Nadu and Divya Deshmukh from Maharashtra, both with five points each; Ananya Rishi Gupta from Maharashtra with 4.5 points; Mrudul Dehankar from Maharashtra and Brishty Mukherjee from Tamil Nadu, with 4 points each. From Punjab, Tiya Setia, Gunjan Kanda, Anahita Verma, Tushita Chopra, Yashika Bansal are on the top with 2 points each. In the category of boys, the top five standing are CM Kushagra Mohan from Telangana with five points; Arnav Tiwari from Delhi, AGM Rathneesh R from Tamil Nadu, Samant Aditya from Maharashtra and Shyam Prasad Reddy K with 4.5 points each. In the same category, the top five position holders from Punjab are Bhavesh Mahajan, CM Tanmay Jain, Jayan Pasricha, Namitbir Singh Walia with three points each; and Mukul Singal with 2.5 points. —TNS
