Essential to manage crop residue: Experts

SAMRALA: An agricultural awareness camp was organised at Salana Bet village to promote in-situ crop residue management by the Department of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare, Machhiwara Sahib.

An agricultural awareness camp was organised at Salana Bet village to promote in-situ crop residue management by the Department of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare, Machhiwara Sahib.

The event was held under supervision of Block Agriculture Officer Dr Manjit Singh.

Agriculture Development Officer Dr Gagandeep Singh gave thorough information regarding paddy straw management and importance of soil testing. He encouraged agriculturits to create farmer groups to obtain higher percentage of subsidy on machines.

He gave valuable information about management of weeds, insects and diseases in rabi crops, its symptoms and prevention of yellow rust disease. He advised farmers to use pesticides and fertilisers as per the recommendation of the PAU.

Agriculture Inspector Chamkaur Singh Ghangas said problem of weed was less wherein it was sown with Happy Seeder and the cost of cultivation also decreases. He said managing crop residue within the field plays an important role in maintaining soil health and pollution-free environment. Moreover, he asked farmers to opt for organic farming, cultivation of green manures and legumes before kharif crops.

Ten farmers, including Bhag Singh, Balwinder Singh Akalgarh, Harvinder Singh Aslana Bet, Daljeet Singh, Baljeet Singh, Ajit Singh Salana Bet, Mangat Singh Raipur Bate, Gurmeet Singh, Balvir Singh Hedon Bet, Pritpal Singh Rajewal Rajputan and Sarabjit Singh Bairsal Khurd were honoured with appreciation letters by the department.

Gurmeet Singh Cheema thanked the officials and farmers on the behalf of the village panchayat. Daljeet Singh Akalgarh, Sucha Singh Lubangarh, Gajjan Singh Kaoke and Kuldeep Singh Mahaddipur also participated in the camp.
