The volunteers of Press Club and Youth Club of Doraha took out a rally against single-use plastic and raised slogans for total eradication of it today. They also urged shopkeepers and hawkers to opt or jute bags instead of plastic.

The volunteers also visited the sabzi mandi of Doraha and educated the hawkers against the use of plastic. They asked them to shun the use of plastic completely and educate them about the plastic-ban implemented by the government. They were asked to encourage customers to bring cloth bags on their own. The customers, who visited the mandi, were provided jute and cloth bags by the volunteers.

“Plastic is one of the major toxic pollutants of our time. Being a non-biodegradable substance, composed of toxic chemicals, plastic pollutes earth, air and water. Plastic clogs the intestines of animals and sea creatures which leads to slow starvation and ultimate death. The task ahead can be accomplished only if each and every citizen feels that the use of plastics is not only harmful for them but also for future generations,” shared Prof Harpreet Singh, leader of the group of volunteers.

Jandeep Kaushal, active social worker of the area, who supported the movement initiated by the press and youth club of the town. He said: “If the youth are awake, none can muster courage to use, sale or supply plastic. It is for the young to rise up to the occasion not only to save themselves but also each and every individual who collectively forms a society and nation on the whole.”
