Rooftop kitchen gardens have catched fancy of environmentalists for over a decade. Several social and constitutional bodies have come forward to provide technical knowhow and support residents who wish to develop a rooftop kitchen garden.

Former president of municipal council Jatinder Bhola said a group of residents had started developing kitchen gardens on their rooftops after an appeal was made by Dr Indu, who was earlier posted as the SDM in Malerkotla.

“We have prepared soil beds on rooftops of our houses to grow traditional crop plants, besides herbaceous ornamental plants and vegetables,” said Bhola and Sukhcharan Jit Sharma, president, Eco Club.

Suraaj Mohammad, president, Municipal Council, and Rotary Club president SP Sofat said besides providing fresh vegetables, kitchen garden was a source of enjoyment as well. “For women and children, kitchen garden is a place where they can spend spare time by taking care of plants. Other than saving money, it provides organic vegetables,”said Mohammad.

He said councillors have been asked to create awareness among residents.
