SAMRALA (LUDHIANA): Samrala residents hailed researcher Dr Gagandeep Kaur Kang’s achievement of becoming the first woman scientist in India to be elected to The Royal Society.

Samrala residents hailed researcher Dr Gagandeep Kaur Kang’s achievement of becoming the first woman scientist in India to be elected to The Royal Society. As the news that Kang has joined the coveted league of scientists of the order of Issac Newton reached the town, people expressed happiness over the success of Kang, whose family has roots in Samrala.

Though she was earlier not known to many people here but she has become an inspiration for them now. People are sharing the messages of her success on social media. Dr Kang is one of the 51 eminent scientists from across the world to become fellow of the Royal Society this year.

Her cousin, Gagandeep Singh, a farmer, is on cloud nine. Though he currently resides in Mohali, but he does farming in his fields at Samrala. “I could not describe how happy I am on her achievement. I got a call from my aunt that she has been elected to the Royal Society. It’s a proud moment for our entire country.” “Though Dr Kang has not resided at Samrala but her father had studied here. He had retired from the Railways. Her family owns around eight acres in Samrala,” he said.

Parwinder Singh Balli, president of the Friends Foundation, an NGO, said, “We feel proud of a daughter of Samrala. It is a big honour for the town too. We salute the scientist for her wonderful contribution to vaccine development in India. The government should honour her.”

Samrala MLA Amrik Singh Dhillon said Dr Kaur would be honoured for creating a history. He said, “I congratulate her for the achievement.”
