200 participate in conference on north-west India at university

CHANDIGARH: A conference on ‘Contemporary Issue in North-West India: Challenges and Strategies’ was organised by the Department of Sociology, Panjab University (PU), on Monday.

A conference on ‘Contemporary Issue in North-West India: Challenges and Strategies’ was organised by the Department of Sociology, Panjab University (PU), on Monday.

PU VC Raj Kumar stressed upon the need for the integration of social and natural sciences. He advocated that social scientists must collaborate with other disciplines.

Prof Shankarji Jha, Dean of University Instructions, focused on the need for looking towards problems with “Indo-logical” perspective rather than the western perspective.

Prof AK Joshi, Head, Department of Sociology from BHU, Varanasi, focused on problems and burning issues in states such as Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, J&K and Chandigarh. He stressed on the need to give better care to the elderly. He said everybody must plan for his or her old age. He said issues relating to health, well-being, violence and negligence must be understood in terms of their relation with drug abuse, female foeticide and infanticide.

Prof Sanjay Kaushik, Director, ICSSR, appreciated the Department of Sociology for hosting the conference.

Prof Rajesh Gill, president of PUTA, dwelt on the need for recognising diversities in the northwest Indian states.

The concluding remarks were made by Prof Davinder Singh from the Law Department.

The conference was attended by more than 200 delegates, including teachers, research scholars and students. In all, more than 90 research papers were presented in seven different technical sessions.
