Mohali, July 18

The police have arrested Balkar Singh of Sangrur, Insaaf Singh and Gurvinder Singh of Tarn Taran, Preeti of Sohana and Sweety of Kumbhra for looting valuables from people on the pretext of providing them escort service.

One car and a stolen mobile phone have been recovered from their possession. Their accomplices, Vishal Gill and Rahul Pandit, are yet to be arrested, said Rajesh Kumar, Phase 8 SHO.

The police said the suspects used to trap victims by luring them on the pretext of providing “escort service” on an online portal. They called them in and around the Mohali area. They would pick a quarrel with their victims and snatch money and mobile phones from them.

The DSP City 2, HS Bal, said, “A victim had complained that some persons snatched money and phone from him at Kumbhra on the pretext of providing him escort service. Often, the girls used to be different than those shown on the portal, which led to altercations. During the scuffle, the suspects snatched valuables from their victims.”

A case under Sections 379-B, 323, 341, 506, 148 and 149 was registered at the Phase-8 police station on July 14. They were produced before the court that sent them to police remand.
