Chandigarh: Early screening can identify Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) before it could result in major loss of lung functioning. Most cases of COPD are caused by inhaling pollutants that include smoking (cigarettes, pipes, cigars, etc.) and second-hand smoke, while fumes, chemicals and dust found in many work environments are also some contributing factors. This was stated by a team of doctors from Alchemist Hospital, Panchkula, while sharing facts and myths regarding the disease. “COPD is the second largest killer after heart problems and cancer and India has become the ‘COPD capital of world’. COPD can develop for years without noticeable shortness of breath,” said Dr Sunny Virdi, consultant, Pulmonology. TNS
