Poor start for Punjab Police, Hisar Club cagers in Fed Cup

CHANDIGARH:Punjab Police hoopsters lost 58-66 to MEG Bangalore in their opening match of the 32nd Federation Cup, which kicked off in Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh, on Tuesday.

Punjab Police hoopsters lost 58-66 to MEG Bangalore in their opening match of the 32nd Federation Cup, which kicked off in Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh, on Tuesday. 

Punjab Police were leading 31-20 at the half time, but MEG Bangalore, aided by Rahul’s 24-point effort made a strong comeback in the second half to seal the match. Rajveer was the top scorer for Punjab Police with 12 points.

Hisar Club, Haryana, also had a disappointing beginning as they bowed 65-73 to Indian Overseas Bank, Chennai. 

After trailing in the first two quarters (14-20, 8-16), Haryana boys took the fight to the opponents in the second half (20-19, 23-18) but failed to achieve a desired result.  

For Hisar Club, Sandeep shot 13 points, while Aravind was the top scorer for the bankers with 16 points.

Earlier, Eudrick scored 21 points to help Customs and Excise, Cochin, register a 70-62 win over Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh.

In the women’s category, Kerala overcame Tamil Nadu 66-60, while Eastern Railways drubbed Telangana 64-22. Karnataka thrashed Andhra Pradesh 45-19. Maharshtra, meanwhile, had an easy outing against Delhi, winning their opening game 44-26.

The best club/state teams from the top eight states, in both men’s and women’s categories, in addition to the hosts Andhra Pradesh are participating in the six-day-long tournament organised under the aegis of the BFI. — TNS
