Awareness programmes were organised to observe World AIDS Day at different academic institutions in the city on Sunday. A special seminar on AIDS was organised by the Red Ribbon Club, Baba Farid College. In the seminar, Narender Kumar Bassi, UN AIDS Civil Society Awardee and State Awardee Community AIDS educator arrived as the keynote speaker. He educated the students about the survival of terrible disease like AIDS.

BD Sharma, deputy director, career guidance and counselling, Baba Farid Group of Institutions (BFGI), welcomed Bassi and said that information about precautions was vital to us to avoid disease as AIDS.

Bassi said, “AIDS has become a major problem in the world and the worst thing is that there is not yet a cohesive treatment. AIDS is not an infectious disease. It spreads through infected mother to her baby during pregnancy, transfusion of infected blood or blood products, use of infected needles and instruments without sterilisation of sharing of needles.”

He added that this dangerous disease can be avoided by adopting the values set by the society. AIDS awareness movement can get rid from this problem. AIDS awareness symbols and pamphlets were also distributed to the students.
