The district today witnessed three fatalities, taking the toll 145. It saw 188 fresh cases of coronavirus, taking the tally to 7,125. As many as 154 patients were cured and discharged from various hospitals in the district.

The Civil Surgeon, Dr Manjit Singh, said three men died due to the virus during the past 24 hours. He said a 28-year-old man from Phase IX died at Fortis Hospital, while a 47-year-old man from Sohana village died at the GMCH, Patiala. He was suffering from diabetes and hypertension. A 62-year-old man from Kurali died at Shalby Hospital. He was a diabetic.

Among the 188 fresh cases, 76 were from Mohali urban, 22 from Kharar, 21 from Gharuan, 45 from Dhakoli, 17 from Dera Bassi, five from Lalru and one each from Boothgarh and Kurali.

The district has so far recorded 7,125 positive cases. As many as 4,660 patients have been cured and discharged. There are 2,320 active cases. The district has witnessed 145 deaths due to the virus.

‘Elderly with comorbidities at greater risk’

The Civil Surgeon, Dr Manjit Singh, said senior citizens with comorbidities such as diabetes and hypertension were at a higher risk if they got the deadly virus. He said of the 142 fatalities reported till Tuesday, 70 people were above the age of 60 with multiple comorbidities. He said 85 per cent of the deaths took place due to acute diabetes and hypertension, and the patients developed respiratory problems after contracting Covid-19. The other ailments include lever infections, kidney failures, cancer, cardiac arrest, bypass surgery and asthmatic and respiratory problems, he added.
