Governor stresses use of scientific inputs in natural farming

Governor Bandaru Dattatreya today emphasised the use of technology in horticulture and urged scientists to transform their research work according to the changing weather conditions, while virtually presiding over the 36th foundation day function of Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, from Shimla today.

He talked about using scientific inputs in natural farming. He said 22 projects worth Rs 7.85 crore had been received in the past one year to promote research activities through various financial institutions. He said Rs 25 crore had been approved by the world bank-funded National Agricultural Higher Project of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research.

The Governor urged the teachers to spread awareness about the National Education Policy and prepare a roadmap for agriculture and horticulture development in the state.

Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur said the Agriculture Act was a step to strengthen the economy of the farmers. He added that the Centre was committed to the welfare of farmers and the Act would ensure better price for their produce.

He said, “Scientists must take research to the fields to achieve the desired result. Specific assignments must be given to the scientists in this regard. He said the Prime Minister’s target of doubling farm income by 2022 can be achieved with the cooperation of scientists.”

“Horticulture has emerged as a potential avocation in accelerating the growth of the rural economy. The state ranked fifth in apple production globally and the gross value of fruits produced in Himachal during 2019-20 was estimated to be around Rs 4,000 crore,” said Thakur.

Progressive farmers and horticulturists were also honoured for their innovations. Horticulture Minister Mahender Singh Thakur, Agriculture Minister Virender Kanwar, Forest Minister Rakesh Pathania and Health Minister Rajiv Saizal also participated in the online celebration.
