Ludhiana, February 13

Victim’s kin allege political interference

  • Kamlesh, mother of Puneet, said Shubham had old enmity with her son. Earlier also, he, along with his aides, had attempted to kill her son. “If Congress Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh cannot control his Youth Congress leaders, they should be shunted out. Strict action should be taken against these goons,” said the woman. She alleged political interference was delaying the arrest of suspects. Since the main accused are Youth Congress leaders and the Congress is in power in Punjab, the police are not arresting them, alleged Puneet’s mother.

Two Youth Congress leaders, namely Shubham Arora and Ankit Sharma, who are presidents of Central and East constituency, respectively, along with several of their aides, have been booked by the Moti Nagar police on the charge of attempt to kill Puneet Bains, alias Mani, of Labour Colony, over old enmity.

The police have booked Shubham Arora of Madhopuri, Ankit Sharma of Tibba Road, Sandeep of Bhamian Road, Nannu of Dharampura, Nihal, JP and seven unknown persons in the case.

Gaurav, a friend of injured youth Puneet, told the police that on the night of February 11, he, along with Puneet and others, went to the Indian Summer restaurant on RK Road to have dinner.

“When we came out after having dinner, Shubham and Ankit, who are Youth Congress presidents, along with their aides armed with baseball bats, iron rods and swords, cornered Puneet and severely injured him. They also thrashed us. The assailants left the place taking Puneet for dead.

“We rushed Puneet to the CMCH. He was admitted to the ICU ward,” said Gaurav.

Moti Nagar SHO Varunjit Singh said the condition of the victim was critical. The police are conducting raids at the possible whereabouts of the suspects, he said.
