Sacks open up accidentally, hundreds scurry to pick onions on Gujarat highway

On the busy Rajkot-Ahmedabad highway, bizarre scenes were witnessed on Friday when some large onion sacks loaded on a trolley accidentally opened up resulting in a near stampede as people scurried to collect some of them.

The incident happen in the early hours when the trolley packed with onion consignment was going from Rajkot to the Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) yard at Gondal for delivery. 

Officials said that when the trolley reached Dodai Dungari village, some of the sacks accidentally opened up.  Within minutes, a large number of onions were strewn all over a stretch of the national highway connecting Rajkot to Ahmedabad.

Bizarre scenes were witnessed as people risked their lives to converge at the spot to try and collect as many onions as possible, undeterred by vehicles moving at a high speed on the national highway.

The onion prices across the country have been on an upswing off late with prices touching Rs 100 a kg in the retail market. Incidents of onion consignments being looted from vegetable dealers have been reported in the last one week from across the country.
