Tarn Taran, September 10
The Tarn Taran police have arrested Karanveer Singh (22), driver of the SUV that crushed two cops to death at a checkpoint near Amarkot village on Sunday. A case under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC has been registered against him.
Border Range IG SPS Parmar and SSP Darshan Singh visited the spot on Monday.
The officials also visited the aggrieved families and expressed their condolences. They assured all possible help to the families of the two cops.
Head Constable Inderjit Singh (35), a resident of Theh Sarhali, and Kuldeep Singh (50), a Home Guard jawan from Khemkaran, were killed after being hit by the SUV. Both were employees of the Valtoha police.
The cops were on duty and had signalled the vehicle to stop when the driver hit them.
The SSP said as per the preliminary probe, the accused, a resident of Kamaldeenke village in Ferozepur, was drunk and could not control the vehicle when he was signalled to stop. He said the police have procured the CCTV footage, while a forensic team had also been pressed into service to collect more evidence.
The SUV belongs to Karaj Singh, brother of notorious drug smuggler Saraj Singh of Dasuwal village. — OC
