Be careful about rights violations by those in power, says expert

PATIALA:The Human Rights Protection Welfare Society (HRPWS), Patiala, celebrated Human Rights Day at the convention hall of Thapar University here yesterday.

The Human Rights Protection Welfare Society (HRPWS), Patiala, celebrated Human Rights Day at the convention hall of Thapar University here yesterday. The significance of the day was told to those present. On this day in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, thus empowering human beings with principles enshrined in the declaration in which dignity and respect have been upheld.

After welcoming dignitaries, Yashwant Sharma, state president, HRPWS, in his inaugural address, stressed the need to be careful about human rights violations committed by persons in authority. Various speakers and dignitaries spoke on the subject and Dr MS Manna, Director AICTE, emphasised on a ‘swacch Bharat’. Prof Inderpal Singh talked about animal rights. He said there was a need to maintain balance in nature and hence, the rights of human beings as well as animals should be taken into consideration. Prof Shailender Jain, Director, SLIET, stressed the need to improve education and health facilities in the state.

Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister Brahm Mohindra appreciated organisers for taking the initiative. On the occasion, the HRPWS selected some persons who made outstanding contributions to society. Dr Sushil Mittal, Rajindra Hospital; Dr Harshinder Kaur; Prithipal Singh, SP, Vigilance; Maheshinder Bansal, social worker; and Balbir Singh, principal, Government Senior Secondary School (Girls), Model Town, Patiala, were awarded by the minister.

The society thanked Thapar University for their help and cooperation in organising the event.
