With the emerging urbanisation and proliferation of industry, threat to the survival of various bird species has increased dramatically. This was stated by Dr Bhavneet Bharti, Professor, Social Pediatrics, and in-charge of the Nivedita Creche, during the World Sparrow Day celebration at PGI on Wednesday.

“Natural habitats of various bird species are rapidly disappearing and coming generations will never see many of them, which were commonly found in our backyard a few decades ago. There is a need for creating awareness regarding threats to our environment,” she added while addressing the children.

The day was celebrated by the Department of Environment, Social Pediatrics Division APC, and BHIM (an NGO). The theme of day this year is ‘I love sparrow.

Prof Jagat Ram, Director, PGI, was the chief guest and BL Sharma, Education Secretary, was the guest of honour.
