Skill development centres will play a key role in fulfilling the pre-poll promise of the Congress to provide one job per family.

Stating this after his four-day visit to the Centurion University of Technology and Management in Odisha, Punjab Technical Education Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has directed the Technical Education department officials to prepare a blueprint for necessary technical advancements in the skill centres of Punjab.

He was impressed to witness the Cafe Coffee Day lab helping in etiquette development for students, especially providing training to deaf and dumb students.

The Minister said students are honing their skills with hands-on approach in welding and furniture labs and that the practice would be started in Punjab.

He interacted with various students working in sponsored engineering labs. Channi showed a keen interest in the industry-sponsored projects which include the automobile labs set up by Ashok Leyland, Yamaha, Hyundai, Schyneider Electric, Godrej and BEML.

Channi also visited another venture of this university, called Urban Micro Business Centre which is a concept for an integrated approach to livelihood, skill and entrepreneurship with sustainable ideas that empower urban slum dwellers.

Channi wanted that the venture be replicated in Punjab so that young manpower in Punjab could be trained in self-employment and industry-oriented courses.
