With the arrest of four persons, the police claim to have busted a fake currency racket and seized counterfeit notes of Rs 2,000 and Rs 100 denomination amounting to Rs 4.15 lakh.

Senior Superintendent of Police Pritpal Singh Thind said the gang would provide buyers double the fake currency in lieu of genuine notes. A car, printer, scanner and other material were also seized.

The arrests were made following a tip-off at T-point on the Rampura road near Bhawanigarh yesterday. Of the fake currency seized, there were 200 notes of Rs 2,000 denomination (Rs 4 lakh face value) and 150 of Rs 100 (Rs 15,000). Those arrested are Harbhajan Dass and Jasvir Singh of Bhawanigarh, Bhagwan Dass and Jaidev of Sangrur, all in the age group of 25 to 30 years.

Thind said the accused, who had been printing the currency for the past around three months, had no criminal record and took to the profession only for easy money. The gang had reportedly been supplying the notes to five persons from various places, including in Sangrur and Chandigarh.
