Rtd cop, HC lawyer among 3 arrested

Three persons, including retired UT police inspector Tarsem Rana and Punjab and Haryana High Court lawyer Jatin Salwan, were arrested in connection with a drug case by the Chandigarh Police.

They were arrested for allegedly planting 2.6 kg opium and fake currency worth Rs 15 lakh in a car of Bhagwan Singh, who was arrested by the police last month, near Maloya. Tarsem, a resident of Sector 26, Salwan, a resident of Sector 15, and third accused Narender, a native of Ludhiana, has been taken on one-day police remand.

Police sources said Narender and Gurnihal Singh Peerjada, a retired IAS officer, had a property dispute case with Sukhbir Singh Shergill. The three arrested accused allegedly asked Shergill to come or send someone to receive a case file so that the case could be disposed of. He sent his accountant Bhagwan to collect the same. However, they allegedly put the cash and drugs in his car and later informed the police. These were recovered from in between the files placed on the rear seat of the car. Nayagaon resident Bhagwan was arrested in Maloya on June 16 with cash and drugs. However, during investigations, call records of all persons involved in the case were checked. The police found that the three had allegedly planned to get Bhagwan and his boss Shergill trapped.

Lawyers throng courtroom

Resentment was witnessed among the laywers’ community over the arrest of advocate Salwan. Around 30 to 35 advocates from the District Courts and the Punjab and Haryana High Court were there at the court when the case was taken up. The lawyer said he had been falsely implicated in thecase.
